    Open Word.

At the top right of Word, log out of Office.

Restart (not shut down) your PC, then log back into Office, is your subscription then recognised correctly.

The "Update payment" banner usually appears when Microsoft 365 detects a past or current billing problem, even if a recent charge shows as paid. It is commonly caused by one of these:

    1. A previous payment attempt failed and left an outstanding balance on the subscription.
    2. The subscription is billed from a different Microsoft account than the one currently signed in to Office.
    3. The payment method on file is expired/invalid for future renewals, even though the last charge went through.

To clear it, follow these steps:

    1. In a browser, go to the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page and sign in with the same account used in Office.
    2. Check the Microsoft 365 subscription status:
      • If it shows past due, suspended, or similar, there is still an outstanding balance. Use the guidance in Pay for a past-due Microsoft subscription to complete payment or fix the payment method.
      • If it shows active with no past-due notice, verify there are no other Microsoft accounts (work, school, or personal) that might also have a Microsoft 365 subscription with a billing issue.
    3. On the same page, open Payment options and confirm that the card listed for Microsoft 365 is valid (not expired, not cancelled). If needed, use Change your Microsoft subscription payment method and options to switch to a valid card.
    4. After fixing any past-due balance or invalid card, restart the Office app. The banner should disappear once the subscription is recognized as active and paid.

If the subscription is active, payment method is valid, and the banner still remains, contact Microsoft Support for Billing and Payment updates so an agent can review the subscription and clear any incorrect past-due flag.
