    Hi (Student) Ellta Mulubrhan,

Please note that our forum is a public platform, and we will modify your question to hide personal information in the description. Kindly ensure that you hide such details the next time you post to protect personal data.

I completely understand how stressful it is to be locked out of your device with a BitLocker recovery key you can’t find. That said, I need to be clear: you cannot regenerate a key once the drive is locked, nor bypass BitLocker.

Now, based on the screenshots you shared, your device is linked to an organisation, likely managed by your school (organisation status: Active). The recovery key is often stored in their system automatically. Here's what to do:

    1. Contact your school IT/helpdesk
    2. Ask them to check Azure AD / Entra ID
    3. Provide the Device object ID.

BitLocker is a serious security feature, if it can be bypassed, it'd be ineffective. This is the hard truth, but without the recovery key, the data on the drive cannot be accessed. The only option at that point is to reset or reinstall Windows.

A new BitLocker recovery key cannot be generated once the drive is locked. To sign in again, the existing 48‑digit BitLocker recovery key for that specific drive must be found and entered; without it, the encrypted data on the drive cannot be accessed.

Use these locations and methods to look for the existing key:

    1. Microsoft account
      • If the device was ever signed in with a Microsoft account, the recovery key may be stored there. Sign in to the Microsoft account on another device and check for BitLocker recovery keys as described in Find your BitLocker recovery key.
    2. Work or school account / organization
      • If the PC was set up or managed by a work or school organization, the recovery key might be stored in Microsoft Entra ID or Active Directory by the organization’s IT department. Contact the organization’s IT support and provide the Recovery Key ID shown on the blue BitLocker screen so they can look it up.
    3. Other backup locations
      • Check for any of the following created when BitLocker/device encryption was turned on:
        • A printed copy of the 48‑digit key.
        • A text file or document on a USB drive or another PC.
        • A key stored in another Microsoft account used previously on this device.

If the recovery key cannot be found in any of these locations, the encrypted drive cannot be unlocked. In that case, the only option is to erase the drive and reinstall Windows, which will result in loss of all data on that BitLocker‑protected drive. This behavior is by design: BitLocker encryption protects the data so that no one, including Microsoft support, can bypass it without the recovery key.

For future protection after regaining access or reinstalling Windows, save the new BitLocker recovery key in at least one safe location (for example, Microsoft account plus a printed copy or USB file) as described in the BitLocker FAQ.
