Try these steps in order to get the Surface Pro 4 working again.
- Force a shutdown and restart
- Press and hold the Power button until the Surface shuts down and restarts and the Windows logo appears again (about 20 seconds), then release the Power button.
- If it starts normally, try the reset again only after checking Windows Update (Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update) to improve reliability.
- If Windows still freezes during reset
If the built‑in reset keeps freezing or Windows will not load at all, use a USB recovery drive instead of the internal reset:
- On another working PC, follow the steps in Creating and using a Surface USB recovery drive to create a USB recovery drive for Surface.
- If the built‑in recovery creation fails or is not available, download the correct Surface Recovery Image for Surface Pro 4 and use it to prepare the USB recovery drive.
- Insert the USB recovery drive into the Surface Pro 4.
- Boot from the USB (on Surface Pro 4: power off, then hold Volume‑Down and press Power, release Power when the logo appears but keep holding Volume‑Down until it boots from USB).
- Use the recovery options on the USB drive to reinstall Windows. This will:
- Reinstall Windows
- Delete all personal files
- Reset all settings
- Remove all apps that were installed
If Windows still will not start or keeps freezing even from a fresh recovery, repeat the USB recovery to confirm it is a clean install; if the issue persists after that, the device likely needs hardware service.
