BitLocker recovery key not found – unable to access device

Help! help!

Few days ago, after finishing my night shift at the hospital, I found that my Microsoft Surface Pro 7 was displaying a BitLocker issue and prompting me to enter a recovery key.

I logged into all my available email and Outlook accounts and was eventually able to identify the device. However, the system indicates that the recovery key has not been uploaded under the device.

Despite several attempts, I am still unable to retrieve the recovery key.

I am very concerned, as many important patient healthcare files and case discussions/presentations are stored on this PC and are currently inaccessible. I would greatly appreciate your guidance on how to resolve this issue.

I am so incredibly sorry to hear you're going through this stressful situation of being locked out of your own laptop, especially with the fear of losing important patient data. I wish I could share good news, but I have to be direct with you:

No one can recover your BitLocker key for you if it was never backed up, not even Microsoft. And if it cannot be found, there is no technical way to unlock the drive or recover the data. BitLocker is a serious security feature, and if its encryption could be bypassed, it would be ineffective.

The only way to use the laptop again in that case would be to reinstall Windows, which will unfortunately erase everything on the drive. However, before accepting data loss, please double‑check all possible locations where the key could exist:

  • If this Surface was ever connected to:
    • A work or school account, check with your IT department (Azure AD / Entra ID can store keys).
    • A prior Windows sign‑in user on the same device, ask that user to check their Microsoft account.
  • Check your cloud storage (especially OneDrive) for key or bitlocker file
  • Search any backups, USB drives, printed documents, photos, or notes.

If none is found, unfortunately, data loss is inevitable. I know this is not the answer you were hoping for, but I believe it is best to be direct and give you the correct information.
