I have a God Daddy Domain. I want to create an email address using that domain. I was told that I have to have the tenant account for the domain removed by Microsoft. How do I do that?

    Hi TONY MINTER

From your description, it appears that your domain is already associated with an existing Microsoft 365 tenant. In Microsoft 365, a custom domain can only be linked to one tenant at a time, so it needs to be removed from the current tenant before you can use it elsewhere.

In this case, you’ll need to contact Microsoft Support so they can verify your ownership and help release the domain from the previous tenant. Once confirmed (usually via DNS verification and other checks), they will remove the domain from the old tenant and notify you when the release is complete.

After that, you will be able to add and verify the domain in your own Microsoft 365 tenant normally.

If you still have access to that tenant, you can sign in as a Global Admin and remove the domain by following the steps in the official document: Get support - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn

If you are the only Global Administrator and you cannot log in to Admin center, you might need to contact Microsoft via phone service number: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support. The agent will be able to create a ticket for you under the affected tenant and then transfer this ticket to Data Protection team who could help you to regain access.

    • To connect directly with a real person when you call Microsoft support, the call must include the term AdminCenter, and the role must be specified as Global Administrator.
    • In the description of the request, the term AdminCenter must also be mentioned.
    • During the telephone dialog, if asked about another administrator, you can answer “no.” The call will then be forwarded to a real support agent, and a service request can be created.

(Please understand that we're not Microsoft support, this is a user-to-user support forum. Moderators have no backend access and cannot directly intervene in Microsoft products. We provide only technical guidance and best-practice recommendations based on reported issues)

I hope this information helps and if you have any question, please feel free to ask via comment section!

A custom domain that is already attached to a different Microsoft 365 tenant cannot be “self-removed” without access to that tenant. Microsoft must verify ownership and then free the domain so it can be added to a new tenant (for example, via GoDaddy’s Microsoft 365 offering).

From the available information, the only supported path when a domain is stuck in an unknown tenant is to work directly with support so they can manually remove it from that tenant after verifying ownership.

    Actionable steps:

    1. Confirm domain ownership
      • Make sure access exists to the domain’s DNS at GoDaddy (or wherever DNS is hosted). Support will typically ask to add or modify a DNS record to prove ownership.
    2. Contact Microsoft 365 support for domain removal
      • Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center (even a trial tenant using a different domain is sufficient to open a support case).
      • In the lower-right corner, select Help & Support.
      • In the Support Assistant pane, describe the issue, for example: “My domain is already registered in an unknown Microsoft 365 tenant; I own the domain and need it removed so I can use it in my tenant.”
      • If the automated suggestions do not resolve the issue, choose Contact support and open a ticket requesting manual removal of the domain from the unknown tenant.
      • Be prepared to:
        • Prove domain ownership via DNS records.
        • Provide the domain name and any error messages indicating it is already in use.
    3. If the domain is in a known tenant that is under control
      • If at some point it is discovered that the domain is in a tenant that can be accessed, remove it directly:
        • Ensure the domain is not the default domain and is not used by any users, groups, mailboxes, or admin sign-ins.
        • Move all users (including any Global Administrator) to another domain in that tenant (for example, the default *.onmicrosoft.com domain) using Users > Active users > Change domains.
        • After all objects are moved and the domain is no longer in use, remove the custom domain from Microsoft 365 following the “Remove a custom domain” guidance.
    4. If the entire tenant must be closed (rare case)
      • If the domain belongs to a tenant that is intentionally being decommissioned, follow the tenant-closure flow (remove the custom domain, then delete the Microsoft Entra tenant). This is only possible if there is admin access to that tenant.

Because the domain is already bound to an unknown tenant, the key step is opening a support case so Microsoft can manually detach it after verifying ownership. Once that is done, GoDaddy’s Microsoft 365 setup should allow attaching the domain normally.
