Locking and unlocking Personal Vault from task bar icon stopped working on Windows 11

The one-drive icon on the task bar stopped working: the UI goes through the process, but when you try to actually view/edit files - it says that it is still locked. Unlocking the Personal Vault from the File Explorer still works.

    Hello Val Melamed,

When the Personal Vault unlock option stops working from the OneDrive taskbar icon but still works from File Explorer, it usually points to a mismatch between the OneDrive client version and the Windows shell integration. In other words, the background process is not properly syncing the unlock state with the UI.

Make sure you are running the latest OneDrive client, open OneDrive settings and check for updates. Restarting the OneDrive process (right‑click the icon > Close OneDrive, then relaunch) often refreshes the integration. If the problem persists, unlinking and re‑linking your account in OneDrive settings can reset the vault connection without affecting your files.

Checking Windows Updates, since the Personal Vault feature relies on both OneDrive and Windows components. Installing pending updates and rebooting can restore the missing functionality. If you are using a third‑party antivirus or security suite, temporarily disabling it can help confirm whether it is interfering with the vault unlock process.

I hope the response provided some helpful insight. If you find this answer useful, please hit “accept answer” so I know it addressed your concern.

    Jason.

Use File Explorer to unlock the Personal Vault as a workaround, then verify sync and auto-lock settings to restore normal behavior from the taskbar icon.

    1. Unlock and let it fully sync
      1. In File Explorer, open the OneDrive folder and select the Personal Vault shortcut.
      2. Unlock it there (this currently works in the described scenario).
      3. Make sure all files in Personal Vault are closed so they can sync.
      4. Wait until OneDrive finishes syncing (no more sync icon on the OneDrive cloud icon).
    2. Adjust auto-lock time (helps avoid repeated lock state issues while syncing)
      1. Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area.
      2. Select Help & Settings > Settings.
      3. Go to the Account tab.
      4. Under Personal Vault, increase the auto-lock time so the vault does not re-lock while files are still syncing.
    3. Use the supported unlock path from the taskbar
      1. Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area.
      2. Select the Personal Vault folder from the OneDrive UI.
      3. Complete the identity verification (text, email, Microsoft Authenticator, PIN, fingerprint, or face) and confirm that, after sync has completed as above, files can be opened.

If the vault still appears locked only when using the taskbar entry but works from File Explorer, keep using File Explorer as the primary unlock method and verify that OneDrive sync is healthy using the standard sync troubleshooting guidance.
