Minecraft Licenses Missing From My Microsoft Accounts

Hello,

I am looking for advice regarding missing Minecraft licenses.

I previously purchased Minecraft on two different Microsoft accounts (one around 2019 and another around 2025). I still have access to both email addresses and I still have the original purchase receipts and billing emails.

After reinstalling Windows following a malware infection, both Minecraft licenses disappeared. When I sign into Minecraft Launcher using the same Microsoft accounts, I only see "Buy Now" or "Play Demo."

In addition:

  • My previous Minecraft usernames no longer appear.
  • Xbox behaves as if these accounts never owned Minecraft.
  • Minecraft Support redirected me to Microsoft Account Support.
  • I am certain I am using the correct email addresses because I can access the original purchase emails.

Has anyone experienced a situation where Minecraft licenses appeared to be missing from the correct Microsoft account? What steps can I take to verify whether the licenses are still associated with my accounts?

Thank you for any help.

The most reliable way to verify whether an email address is still a valid Microsoft account, and therefore capable of holding a Minecraft license, is to confirm the account status first, then work through Microsoft’s account recovery and support paths.

    1. Confirm each email is still a Microsoft account
      • Go to https://account.microsoft.com and enter each of the two email addresses.
      • If the page shows a password prompt, that email is an active Microsoft account.
      • If the message "We couldn't find an account with that username" or "That Microsoft account doesn't exist" appears, that address is not currently a Microsoft account. In that case:
        • Double‑check spelling (name and domain, for example, rachel vs rachael, .com vs .co.uk).
        • The account may have been closed; see the guidance under "The account may have been closed" in the referenced article.
    2. Make sure the accounts themselves are still open
      • If an account has not been used for more than two years, it may have been deleted and cannot be reopened. In that case, any licenses tied to that account would no longer be accessible.
      • For accounts that appear not to exist anymore, review the "check if your Microsoft account is closed" and "reopen your Microsoft account" guidance referenced in the context.
    3. Use the Sign‑in Helper if there is any sign‑in or recognition issue
      • If a known username or email is not recognized, or if sign‑in behaves unexpectedly, use the Sign‑in Helper tool linked from the account support articles to validate and recover access.
    4. Verify that the purchase emails match the active Microsoft accounts
      • Since there are original purchase receipts and billing emails, compare the exact email address shown as the purchasing account in those receipts with the email addresses confirmed as Microsoft accounts in step 1.
      • If the receipts show an address that is now closed or no longer recognized as a Microsoft account, the licenses would be tied to that closed account.
    5. If the accounts are active but Minecraft still shows "Buy Now" / "Play Demo"
      • At this point, the issue is not with Windows reinstallation but with how the licenses are associated to the Microsoft accounts.
      • Use the general Microsoft account recovery and support paths:
        • Follow the guidance under "I can't sign in to my Microsoft account" to ensure there are no sign‑in or recognition problems with the accounts that should hold the licenses.
        • If the accounts were ever compromised or their security info changed, follow the hacked/compromised account recovery guidance and complete the account recovery form with as much detail as possible (including purchase dates and any partial payment info from the receipts).
      • If the automated recovery form does not confirm or restore the account, the account (and its licenses) cannot be recovered.
    6. Escalate through official support if recovery fails
      • If the accounts are confirmed active, sign‑in is working, and the receipts clearly show purchases on those accounts, but the licenses still do not appear, contact Microsoft account support using the "Get help with your Microsoft account" and "I need to talk to a customer support agent" options referenced in the context.
      • Provide:
        • The exact Microsoft account email addresses (as confirmed in step 1).
        • Copies of the original purchase receipts.
        • Approximate purchase dates and any other billing details shown in the emails.

If the accounts are active and not closed, and support can validate ownership using the receipts and recovery information, they are the only channel that can confirm whether the Minecraft licenses are still associated with those Microsoft accounts or if they have been lost due to account closure or compromise.
