Cannot leave or remove unwanted Entra ID tenant (personal Microsoft account stuck as Member)

Hello, I need help removing my personal Microsoft account from an Entra ID tenant that I did not create.

My account: Hotmail personal Microsoft account (MSA)

The unwanted tenant: [Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed]

Tenant ID: [Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed]

I was added to this tenant by a teacher who no longer has access

My account shows as Member, not Guest

Because I am a Member, I cannot leave the organization

The admin cannot remove me either

I cannot sign in to the tenant using the work/school login (it rejects personal accounts)

The “Leave organization” page does not show the tenant

The “Apps & services” page also does not show the tenant

I cannot open a support ticket because personal accounts are redirected to community support

I need Microsoft to manually remove my personal account from this tenant, because there is no way for me or the admin to do it.

This is a known issue when a personal Microsoft account is added as a Member instead of a Guest.

Please help unlink my account from this tenant.

Thank you.

    Dear @Pawan Uprety,

Thank you for reaching out. I understand that your personal Microsoft account is currently linked to a tenant as a member instead of a Guest, and because of this you are unable to leave the organization or have the account removed through normal self-service methods.

First, I’d like to reconfirm the following information. You mentioned that “The admin cannot remove me either.” May I ask how the admin attempted to remove your account? Could you please check with them again and reply below with the exact steps they performed?

In my test environment, I was still able to successfully remove a guest account through the Entra Admin Center.

In this case, please contact the IT admin of the tenant where your account was added as a member. Ask them to locate your account under Entra Admin Center > Users > Your Account (it does not matter whether the account is listed as Member or Guest) and delete the account from there.

Please note that the deleted user account can still be restored within 30 days after deletion.

Please let me know whether the IT admin of that tenant has already performed the same steps I mentioned above.

Hope you having a nice day and really much warm regards to you as well. I am looking forward to your response!

This scenario requires direct Microsoft support intervention; community or self-service tools cannot remove a personal Microsoft account that is incorrectly added as a Member in a Microsoft Entra tenant.

Based on the provided context, the only supported path is to open a support request with the correct Microsoft support channel for personal accounts and email services (for example, Outlook/consumer account support), not Azure/Entra support. Azure/Entra support cannot directly help with personal Microsoft account issues and will redirect to the email/account support channel.

    Actionable steps:

    1. Use the consumer/email support channel
      • Go to the consumer support entry point for Microsoft accounts and select the Outlook or email-related product category (rather than Azure or Entra).
      • Create a new support request describing that:
        • The account is a personal Microsoft account (MSA),
        • It is stuck as a Member in a Microsoft Entra tenant,
        • The tenant does not appear on the “Leave organization” or “Apps & services” pages,
        • The tenant rejects work/school sign-in attempts,
        • The tenant admin cannot remove the account.
      • Explicitly request escalation to the data protection / account back-end team to manually remove the MSA from the tenant.
    2. Do not use Azure/Entra support for this case
      • Azure/Entra support handles managed Entra ID issues but not core personal Microsoft account linkage problems.
      • As reflected in the context, Azure/Entra moderators direct such cases to the Outlook/email support path because only that team can adjust the MSA’s organization associations.
    3. If the goal is ultimately to close the personal Microsoft account
      • After the Outlook/email support team has removed the MSA from the tenant, follow the standard Microsoft account closure process again.
      • If any further blocking organization references appear, provide those details to the same consumer support channel for additional cleanup.

There is no documented self-service or admin-side Entra operation in the provided context that can fix a personal Microsoft account incorrectly added as a Member; escalation through the consumer/email support path is required.
