My WD external drive is connected to my Dell computer, and it is supposed to be plug and play, but it does not seem to be transferring data to the external drive. What do i need to do to get it set up properly?

Connect that WD external drive to your PC.

    1

Right click your Start Button and open Disk Management.

Expand the bottom pane in Disk Management so all drives and partitions are visible in that pane.

Please provide a screenshot of the Disk Management window.

    2

Right click your Start Button and open Device Manager.

    Expand the Disk Drives section.

Please provide a screenshot of the full Device Manager window.

Use these steps to get the external WD drive working and confirm it is actually transferring data.

    1. Physically check the connection
      • Make sure the USB cable is firmly plugged into both the WD drive and the Dell PC.
      • If the drive has its own power supply, ensure it is connected and switched on.
      • Try a different USB port on the PC (preferably a port directly on the PC, not through a hub).
    2. Confirm Windows detects the drive
      • Open File Explorer from the taskbar.
      • In the left pane, look under This PC and in the list of drives to see if the WD drive appears with its own drive letter.
      • If it appears, try copying a small file (for example from Documents or Desktop) to the WD drive and confirm it completes without error.
    3. If the drive does not appear in File Explorer
      • Check Device Manager to see if the drive is detected but not installed correctly.
      • If the device shows with a warning icon or error code, this usually indicates a driver or configuration problem similar to other storage devices. In that case, update the device’s driver from Device Manager or from the drive/computer manufacturer’s support site.
      • If using a USB hub, connect the WD drive directly to the PC instead of through the hub, as heavy USB hub traffic can cause transfer problems for some devices.
    4. Test with another computer
      • If possible, plug the WD drive into another Windows PC. If it works there, the issue is likely with the Dell PC’s USB ports, drivers, or configuration.
    5. Once the drive is visible, use it for transfers
      • In File Explorer, select the files or folders to back up (for example from Documents, Desktop, Downloads, Pictures, Videos).
      • Hold CTRL to select multiple items.
      • Right-click the selection, choose Show more options > Send to, then select the WD external drive.
      • Wait for the copy to complete, then safely eject the drive before unplugging it.

If the drive never appears on any PC, the drive or cable may be faulty and may need replacement.
