    Hi,

Are you upgrading from Windows 11 Home to Windows 11 Pro?

If so, this type of upgrade normally does not reset your PC or delete your personal files, installed programs, or settings. When you upgrade by entering a valid Windows 11 Pro product key, Windows simply unlocks the Pro features that are already included in the operating system.

The same applies if you purchase the Windows 11 Pro upgrade through the Microsoft Store. After the purchase is completed and the upgrade is initiated, Windows will upgrade the edition from Home to Pro while keeping your files, applications, and settings intact.

During the process, your PC may need to restart one or more times, but this should not remove your data. In most cases, the upgrade is completed without requiring a clean installation of Windows.

As a precaution, it is always a good idea to back up important files before making any major system changes.

Could you confirm whether you are upgrading from Windows 11 Home to Windows 11 Pro using a product key or through the Microsoft Store? Also, are you seeing any errors when attempting the upgrade?

Changing or upgrading a Windows 11 product key by itself does not reset the PC, remove personal data, or reinstall Windows.

What typically happens when entering a new key (for example, upgrading from Home to Pro):

    1. Edition upgrade process
      • The new product key is entered either in Settings > System > Activation > Change product key or via command-line tools like changepk.exe or slmgr.vbs.
      • Windows validates the key and, if it corresponds to a higher edition (for example, Home → Pro), performs an edition upgrade.
    2. Reboot behavior
      • An edition upgrade can require a restart to complete.
      • This restart is similar to a normal Windows update reboot, not a reset or reinstall.
    3. Data, apps, and settings
      • For supported edition upgrades (for example, Home → Pro, Pro → Enterprise), personal data, apps, and most settings are preserved.
      • The upgrade path tables explicitly mark these as full upgrades that keep personal data, settings, and applications.
    4. When data loss can occur
      • Data loss is associated with unsupported paths or scenarios that require a clean install (for example, downgrading to an earlier version or edition where no supported path exists). In such cases, a reinstall is needed, which can remove files, apps, and settings.
      • Simply changing a valid key to move along a supported upgrade path does not perform a reset.
    5. Safe practice
      • Even though supported edition upgrades preserve data, it is always safer to have a backup before making licensing or edition changes.

In summary: entering an upgraded product key for a supported edition upgrade may cause a restart but does not reset Windows or delete personal files and apps. Data loss occurs only when a clean install or unsupported downgrade path is involved.
