External microphone works in legacy Discord app but is completely dead in modern Windows Apps

Hey team, I have a USB microphone that registers voice perfectly fine when using the desktop standalone version of Discord or Audacity. However, if I try to use it inside the Windows Voice Recorder app, the Xbox party chat, or any browser-based app, it picks up absolute silence. It seems like Windows modern app privacy layer is blocking access.

    Hi Neha Gupta

I think it’s not the mic itself, it’s Windows privacy controls kicking in. Modern apps like Voice Recorder, Xbox party chat, and browsers go through the Windows privacy layer, while desktop apps like Discord or Audacity bypass it. That’s why you’re seeing silence in those newer apps.

The quick fix is to head into Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and make sure “Allow apps to access your microphone” is turned on, and then scroll down to confirm the specific apps (Voice Recorder, Xbox, browsers) are toggled to “On.” Sometimes people forget that each app needs explicit permission.

Another thing worth checking is whether you’re running the browser in a restricted mode some enterprise policies or antivirus tools can block mic access there. If that’s the case, you’ll need to adjust policy settings or whitelist the app.

So bottom line: it’s not a driver or hardware issue, it’s just Windows being extra cautious with modern apps. Flip those permissions on, and you should be good to go.

If this clears things up don't forget to share your experience with "Accept answer" . That others in community with similar issues can benefit from the guidance. Thank you!
