Hello, I have a problem with Windows 11 Pro activation after a hardware upgrade. My license shows as RETAIL channel but after changing the motherboard I get error 0xC004F211. The troubleshooter and online activation both failed. The digital license was linked to my old hardware. Can you please help me reactivate? Thank you.

When you run the troubleshooter and it said that troubleshooting has completed, have you selected the option I recently changed hardware on this device?

Because if you selected that option Windows will give you the ability to login into your Microsoft account and pull the Windows license information from that.

You can check out this video guide to demonstrate that step-by-step process:

Error 0xC004F211 indicates that Windows detected a significant hardware change (such as a motherboard replacement) and can no longer find a matching license for the new hardware.

    Follow these steps in order:

    1. Confirm Windows 11 edition
    • Select Start > Settings > System > Activation.
    • Verify that the edition (Windows 11 Pro) matches the edition that was licensed on the old hardware. The existing digital license or product key will only reactivate if the edition is the same.
    1. Make sure the digital license is linked to a Microsoft account
    • On the same Activation page, check the activation status message:
      • If it shows Windows is activated with a digital license, the Microsoft account is not yet linked.
      • If it shows Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account, the account is already linked.
    • If not linked:
      1. Sign in with an administrator account.
      2. Go to Settings > Accounts > Your info and confirm Administrator is shown under the account name.
      3. Return to Settings > System > Activation, select Add an account, and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the retail license.
      4. After this, the message should change to Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.
    1. Run the Activation troubleshooter for a hardware change
    • Still in Settings > System > Activation, select Troubleshoot.
    • When the troubleshooter reports Windows can’t be activated on your device, choose I changed hardware on this device recently.
    • Sign in with the same Microsoft account that was linked to the digital license.
    • From the list of devices associated with that account, select the checkbox for This is the device I’m using right now, then select Activate.
    1. Use the product key if available
    • If the retail license was originally activated using a product key and that key is available, enter it again:
      • Go to Settings > System > Activation > Change product key and enter the 25-character key.
    1. Use the exception path for license transfer
    • For error 0xC004F211 after a hardware change, there is an exception path for transferring a Windows license:
      • Ensure sign-in with the same Microsoft account that was used before the hardware change.
      • Go to Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot.
      • If the troubleshooter cannot resolve the issue automatically, use the link it provides to reactivate after a hardware change and follow the prompts.
    1. If activation still fails
    • If Windows originally came preinstalled on a different device and the motherboard has been replaced, a new license may be required.
    • If the error persists or changes, check the updated error code and follow the guidance in the Windows activation errors article.
    • If none of the documented steps resolve the issue, contact customer support for manual reactivation or further assistance.
