I am not sure if this is a personal setting issue or microsoft updated web outlook but I was able to easily navigate through emails by clicking an arrow button. That arrow button is now gone and now I have to manually open and close each email and manually click on the next one. This is such an inceoncveinence. Can someone help?

Hi Laveau, Daniel

I understand you’re experiencing an issue where the Next/Previous (arrow) navigation is missing in Outlook on the web, so you can’t quickly move through messages. Could you confirm:

  • Are you using Outlook.com (personal) or Outlook on the web for a work/school account?
  • Which browser are you using (Edge, Chrome, Safari, Firefox)?
  • Are you using Reading Pane: Right/Bottom, or is it currently Hidden?

Meanwhile, please also test:

1) Bring the Next/Previous buttons back (if you prefer clicking)

In Outlook.com (web):

  • Select Settings (gear icon)
  • Go to Mail > Layout
  • Under Reading pane, set it to Hide (turn Reading Pane off) and Save
  • Open an email again — the Previous / Next controls typically reappear when the Reading Pane is hidden.

2)  Use keyboard navigation

In the message list, use:

  • Up Arrow = previous message
  • Down Arrow = next message

To view shortcut help in Outlook on the web, press ? (question mark) to open keyboard shortcuts.

3) If it happens only in one browser

Sometimes this behavior can be browser/UI-rendering dependent. Please try signing into the same mailbox using Microsoft Edge (or another browser) to see whether the arrows appear there.

Please tell me how it goes. If the problem persists, please don’t hesitate to reply to this thread and I will be happy to help. Have a lovely day!
