Hi Ben Teigen
Once the OS drive is toast and you’re running off a temp license, Windows itself won’t just hand you the old activation key back. The key isn’t stored in plain text inside Windows.old, so you can’t just browse the folder and grab it. What you can try is pulling the key from the registry hives that were backed up in Windows.old. Specifically, you’d look under Windows.old\Windows\System32\config for the SOFTWARE hive, then load that hive into Registry Editor on your current install. From there, tools like NirSoft’s ProduKey or ShowKeyPlus can read the product key info from that hive.
If that doesn’t pan out, the next best option is checking whether the key was tied to your Microsoft account or volume licensing portal sometimes it’s recoverable from your purchase history or VLSC. Worst case, if it was OEM, the key might be embedded in the BIOS/UEFI firmware, and tools like RWEverything or ShowKeyPlus can pull it straight from there.
So in short:
- Try extracting from the old registry hive.
- Check your Microsoft account or licensing portal.
- If OEM, pull it from BIOS/UEFI.
That should cover your bases without needing to reinstall everything from scratch. If this helps you get back , please hit “accept answer” so I know you’re good to go. If you need more information, feel free to leave a message. We are happy to help!
