I'm having issues with archiving a channel. I go through the steps in the desktop app to archive the channel but it does not work. It shows as an active channel in the Manage Team section. Is anyone else have this issue?

    Dear @Kevin Bouwman,

To ensure I understand your request correctly and to support you as effectively as possible, I need more specific information from you:

Could you share a screenshot of the issue?

Did the process work smoothly but the channel cannot be archived?

Are you the owner of that channel?

What type of channel is experienced the issue (general, standard, private, or shared channels)?

Only the right owners can archive/restore channels: team owners can archive standard, private, and shared channels, while channel owners can archive private and shared channels. Microsoft’s documented path is to archive from the channel menu or from Manage team > Channels, and then verify it appears under Archived. Archive or restore a channel - Microsoft Support

In addition to the issue, there is an ongoing incident currently preventing users from archiving or deleting private Teams channels. Our engineering team is actively investigating this matter and working toward a resolution.

I understand the inconvenience this may cause and sincerely appreciate your understanding while the issue is being addressed. I will keep you informed of any updates as they become available.

I hope the information shared helps point you in the right direction.

Archiving a channel in Microsoft Teams can fail or appear not to work if certain conditions are not met or if the result is being checked in the wrong place.

    Key points about archiving channels:

    1. Required role
      • Only team owners (for standard, private, and shared channels) and channel owners (for private and shared channels) can archive and restore channels.
      • If not an owner, the archive action will not be available or will not complete as expected.
    2. Correct way to archive in the client
      • In the Teams desktop or web app:
        1. Find the channel in the team.
        2. Select the channel, then choose More options > Archive channel.
      • Or from the team level:
        1. Select the team, then More options > Manage team.
        2. Go to Channels.
        3. For the desired channel, select More options > Archive channel.
    3. Where to verify the result
      • After archiving, the channel gets an archived icon.
      • To confirm its status:
        1. Go to Manage team > Channels.
        2. Use the Archived filter to show only archived channels.
      • If the channel still appears only under active channels and has no archived icon, the archive operation has not completed.
    4. Behavior of an archived channel
      • All channel activity is frozen:
        • No new conversations or replies.
        • Channel settings cannot be edited.
        • Apps cannot be added.
      • Owners can still add/remove members, update roles, and delete, renew, or restore the channel.
    5. Team-level interactions
      • If the team itself is archived, its channels are also archived.
      • A channel cannot be archived or unarchived if its team is archived.
      • Restoring an archived team does not automatically unarchive channels that were archived individually; they remain archived until explicitly restored.

If the archive action appears to succeed but the channel remains active in Manage team, check:

    • That the account is a team/channel owner.
    • That the channel is not blocked by the team’s archive state (team already archived).
    • That the channel is being viewed with the Archived filter to confirm its status.

If all of the above are correct and the channel still does not move to archived state, this indicates a client or service issue and should be escalated to the tenant administrator to open a support case with Microsoft.
