Why can't I log into Microsoft Edge, but can log into my Microsoft Account?

I'm using my work desktop. I tried to log into Microsoft Edge, using my work email address, which is what my work Microsoft account is associated with. Microsoft Edge things I don't have a Microsoft Account. But if I navigate to my Microsoft Account I can easily log into my Microsoft Account using my work email address.

Huh?

What in heck is going on? How can I simultaneously have a Microsoft Account and not have a Microsoft Account?

    Hi Falanga, Rod, DOH,

    Thank you for reaching out.

To better understand the issue, could you please confirm a couple of points:

    • When signing in to Microsoft Edge, are you selecting “Personal account” or “Work or school account”?
    • Are you seeing the same error message as shown below when attempting to sign in?

    User's image

If the error message is different, could you please share a screenshot of what you are seeing? Kindly make sure to hide or remove any personal or sensitive information (such as your email address or password) before sharing.

Besides, since this is a work device, it may be affected by organizational settings or policies. In this case, I recommend reaching out to your IT administrator to confirm:

    • Whether Edge sign-in is allowed on your device
    • Whether there are any restrictions on account types or browser profiles
    • Whether your device is correctly configured for your organization

This situation usually happens because Edge sign-in and web sign-in are using different identity systems and cached credentials, especially with work/school vs personal Microsoft accounts.

    Key points:

    1. Work/school vs personal account
      • A work or school account is created and managed by an organization (via Microsoft 365 / Entra ID).
      • A personal Microsoft account is created by an individual (often via Outlook.com, Xbox, Skype, etc.).
      • The same email address can exist in both systems. In that case, Microsoft will often show a prompt like “Which account do you want to use?” because there are effectively two identities with the same address.
      • Edge might be trying to use one type (for example, work/school) while the site account.microsoft.com is using the other (personal), which makes it look like the account “exists” in one place and “doesn’t exist” in another.
    2. Single sign-on and conflicting profiles
      • On a work desktop, Windows and Edge often use single sign-on (SSO) with the Windows work account.
      • If Edge already has cached credentials or a profile tied to a different identity, it can:
        • Reuse those tokens and say the account being entered is not valid for that sign-in path, or
        • Default to a different account than the one being typed.
      • Multiple accounts or conflicting Edge profiles can cause sign-in failures or repeated prompts.
    3. What to do in Edge Work through these steps in order and test sign-in after each:
      1. Clear cached credentials and cookies in Edge
      • Go to edge://settings/privacy.
      • Under Clear browsing data, select Choose what to clear.
      • Select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files.
      • Set Time range to All time.
      • Select Clear now.
      • Restart Edge and try signing in again from edge://settings/profiles.
      1. Remove conflicting profiles or stored credentials
      • Go to edge://settings/profiles.
      • If there are multiple profiles, sign out of the one that is failing:
        • Select the profile with the issue → Sign out.
      • If the problem continues, remove the problematic profile:
        • In edge://settings/profiles, select the profile → Remove.
        • Restart Edge and create a new profile, then sign in with the work email.
      • On Windows, also clear stored credentials:
        • Open Control PanelCredential Manager.
        • Under Windows Credentials and Generic Credentials, remove entries related to MicrosoftAccount or login.microsoftonline.com that look stale or conflicting.
        • Restart Edge and try again.
        • Note: Removing a profile deletes local browsing data that isn’t synced (favorites, history, passwords). Ensure sync is working or export what is needed first.
      1. Verify account type and credentials
      • Confirm that the work email signs in correctly on the web:
        • For work/school accounts: https://myaccount.microsoft.com.
        • For personal accounts: https://account.microsoft.com.
      • If web sign-in fails, the issue is with the account itself (password, MFA, or lockout) and needs to be fixed there first (password reset or IT admin help).
      1. Check policy or network restrictions (if managed by IT)
      • In Edge, go to edge://policy and look for BrowserSignin:
        • 0 = browser sign-in disabled.
        • 1 = enabled (default).
        • 2 = forced sign-in.
      • If it is 0, browser sign-in is blocked by policy and IT must change it.
      • Also ensure the device can reach authentication endpoints such as https://login.microsoftonline.com and https://login.live.com; if a corporate proxy or firewall blocks them, Edge sign-in can fail even though other sites work.
    4. Why it looks like “having and not having” an account
      • The email address is valid and works at the Microsoft Account portal, so the identity exists.
      • Edge, however, may be:
        • Using cached or OS-level tokens for a different identity.
        • Restricted by policy from signing in.
        • Hitting a network or credential cache issue.
      • Fixing cached data, conflicting profiles, and any sign-in policies usually resolves the mismatch.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, collecting diagnostics (Edge version, edge://policy export, network trace from edge://net-export/, and edge://identity-internals/ status) and providing them to the organization’s IT or Microsoft Support is the next step.
