Surface Laptop 4 - Windows 11 - External Monitors Stuck on "Disconnect this Display" when connected to Surface Dock

I've got a Surface Laptop 4 that suddenly would no longer display anything on it's external monitors when plugged into it's surface dock. In the display setting it shows "Disconnect this display" when selecting the monitors. When attempting to change the monitors back to extend or duplicate it reverts itself back to "Disconnect this display"

Things I have tried:

  • Plugging it into two separate known-good docking stations & monitors
  • Checked for windows updates
  • Reset Display adapters using Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B
  • Checked for firmware updates on the docking station through the surface app
  • Checked for system updates for the surface
  • Wiped and Re-installed windows 11 using a recovery USB

I believe at this point the issue is with the laptop itself. I'm not sure how the wiring is for the charging port but maybe it's broken only with whatever pins are in charge of the display?

If I mess with the dock long enough, I can get it to show on the displays, but the monitors constantly blink.

Has anyone else had this issue?

    Hi Younker, Tyler

I’m really sorry you’re dealing with display issues, especially after a full OS reinstall, as well as testing multiple docks and monitors. So your suspicion about the Surface hardware itself is very reasonable.

However, before concluding, just to confirm, have you also tried different display ports/cables/adapters? Intermittent blinking can sometimes come from an unstable connection. Let’s try out some simple checks:

    1. Connect using a different setup e.g. USB‑C to DisplayPort or HDMI adapter
    2. Inspect and clean the Surface connect port:
      1. Check for dust, debris, or bent pins
      2. Gently clean using compressed air.
    3. Check behavior in UEFI: Shut down > hold Volume Up + Power > check the dock and monitors.

If the issue persists even there, this is very likely an issue with the Surface Connect port or internal display circuitry. In that case, you might need to consider physical repair or replacement:

    1. Refer to How to get service or repair for Surface - Microsoft Support
    2. Sign in at https://account.microsoft.com/devices/select-device-for-repair
    3. If your Surface Pro isn't registered yet, select Register device.
    4. If the device is already registered, choose it and click Next.
    5. Check your warranty and complete your service order.

I wish I can help further, but since this is a user‑to‑user forum we can’t diagnose hardware faults with certainty or initiate repair orders. If you suspect a hardware issue, the best next step is to initiate the service.

Based on the described behavior and the steps already completed, focus on isolating whether the issue is with the Surface Laptop 4 video output path, the dock firmware, or cached display configuration.

    Follow these steps in order:

    1. Verify Windows display mode
    • Press Windows logo key + P and explicitly select Extend or Duplicate while the Surface is connected to the dock and external monitors.
    • If it immediately reverts to Disconnect this display, continue with the hardware and cache steps below.
    1. Basic external display and cable checks
    • Disconnect all accessories from the Surface Laptop 4 except power and the Surface Dock. Connected docks, dongles, and adapters can cause conflicts.
    • Ensure the cables from the dock to each monitor are firmly connected.
    • Try different video cables between the dock and monitors. If a different cable works, the original cable is faulty.
    • Test each external monitor with a different system to confirm both monitors are functioning correctly.
    1. Test with a different external display path
    • If possible, connect the Surface Laptop 4 directly to an external monitor (bypassing the dock) using any available video output (for example, USB-C video adapter if supported).
    • If a direct connection also shows “Disconnect this display” or unstable blinking, this strongly indicates an issue in the Surface’s graphics output path rather than the dock.
    1. Clear the Surface display cache Clearing the display cache can resolve persistent “Disconnect this display” and blinking issues:
    2. Undock the Surface from the Surface Dock or disconnect the external monitors from the Surface.
    3. Download the Surface Dock registry file and choose Open.
    4. Run surface dock registry.reg.
    5. Select Yes to allow changes, Yes to confirm, then OK to close.
    6. Restart the Surface Laptop 4.
    7. Reconnect the Surface Dock and external monitors and test again.
    8. Update Surface Dock firmware explicitly Even if the Surface app reports everything up to date, ensure the dock firmware is refreshed:
    9. Go to Download Surface Tools for IT and download the latest Surface Dock Firmware Update (.msi) as described in the documentation.
    10. Install the Surface Dock Firmware Update on the Surface Laptop 4.
    11. After installation, disconnect and reconnect the Surface from the dock so the firmware update can apply.
    12. Test external monitors again.
    13. Reset graphics and restart
    • Use Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver again while docked.
    • If no improvement, restart the device from Start > Power > Restart. If needed, perform a full shutdown (Start > Power > Shut down) and then power it back on.
    1. Check for system and Surface updates
    • Open the Surface app, go to Help & support, and check the update status.
    • If updates are available, select Check for updates to open Windows Update and install all available driver and firmware updates.
    1. Test with another Surface (if available)
    • If another Surface device is available, connect it to the same dock and monitors.
    • If the second Surface works normally with the dock and monitors, this further confirms a hardware issue with the original Surface Laptop 4’s port or internal graphics path.

If, after clearing the display cache, updating the dock firmware, and confirming cables/monitors/docks are good, the issue persists and the display mode keeps reverting to “Disconnect this display” or the monitors continue blinking, the remaining likely cause is a hardware fault in the Surface Laptop 4 (for example, the Surface Connect port or internal graphics output circuitry). At that point, hardware service for the Surface Laptop 4 is recommended.
