Issue with OneDrive Favorites Opening in Browser Instead of Teams App

Hi Microsoft Support,

I’m reaching out because I’ve noticed a change in how pinned items behave in the Favorites section of OneDrive within the Teams app. Previously, selecting a pinned file would open it directly in the Teams app, but now those same items are launching in a browser instead.

This shift is disrupting my workflow, and I wanted to report it in case it’s a bug or an unintended change. If there’s a setting or update that can restore the previous behavior, I’d appreciate any guidance.

Thank you for taking a look :)

Mine works now after my IT reverted my Micriosoft install. It's definitely a MS issue.

    Hi again,

Thank you for the response. I wanted to clarify the issue a bit more. The trouble isn't with individual files (i.e. Word, Excel or PowerPoint), but with folders from Teams channels that I've pinned in the Favorites section of OneDrive. I access these by clicking the folder name, and these pinned channel folders used to open directly inside the Teams app. Now they only open in a browser.

I also tried the change that you described, but it didn't affect how these pinned channel folders open.

Since these are essentially "links" or "shortcuts" to channel folders, the change is disrupting how I normally access and navigate shared content.

    Thank you for your help.

    Dear @Laural,

To ensure I understand your request correctly and to support you as effectively as possible, I need more specific information from you:

    • Are these files Word, Excel or PowerPoint?
    • How did you open the file? Did you click the file's name directly or you click three dot (...) > Open > Open in app (as the image above)?

After testing, when I clicked the file's name directly, it would open it directly in the Teams app. However, when I clicked three dot (...) > Open > Open in app (as the image above), those same items will be launched a browser instead. Kindly try these steps if these files are Word, Excel or PowerPoint:
Open the Microsoft Teams desktop app.

Click on the three dots next to your profile picture in the top-right corner and select Settings.

Navigate to "Files and links" > look for the section "Always open Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files in" > choose "Teams"

I hope the information shared helps point you in the right direction. Please try the steps above and let me know if they work. If not, we can continue working together to narrow this down.

The first response may not always resolve the issue right away, but with your help and more details, we can work toward a solution.
